By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:

A plan is underway to reduce goods smuggling into Iran by 75 percent, spokesman of the country’s staff for fighting goods smuggling Qassem Khorshidi said.

The plan has been underway for 2 years and three more years remain of it, he told IRIB news agency June 25.

However, he pointed out that action is taken most strongly against sensitive goods such as alcoholic drinks and satellite equipment.

Alcoholic drinks are forbidden and their use is met with severe punishment such as lashing according to the Iranian law. Iranian leaders also consider satellite channels as a tool in the hands of enemies.

“We expect that by the end of the fifth year, goods smuggling into Iran will be below $5 billion a year,” the official said.

According to the statistics, each year $22.5 billion goods are smuggled into the country. The smuggled goods range from fuel to clothing, cell phones and home appliances.

Iran is a major transit route connecting Central Asian countries to the Persian Gulf and Europe. In the meantime Iran is considered as a transit route for carrying fuel from Iraq to the Persian Gulf states.
