Iran has tested a new refinery at phases 20 and 21 of the giant South Pars gas field.

The refinery started injecting 2.26 million cubic meters (mcm) per hour (56 mcm per day) of gas to the national grid on Sep. 5, SHANA reports.

For now, the sour gas of phases 6-8 is being refined at the mentioned refinery.

According to the report, the test was one of the stages in preparation for commencing the phase 21 platform.

The platform is expected to produce 25 mcm/d of gas, which will be processed at the mentioned refinery by October 2016.

The phases 20 and 21 will together produce 50 mcm/d.

Iran has increased the gas output from South Pars to 430 mcm/d and the figure is expected to reach 530 mcm/d by March 2017.

South Pars is jointly owned by Iran and Qatar. On the Iranian side, its reserves stand at 14 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, sharing about a half of the country's total gas reserves.
