The value of clothing smuggling to Iranian markets stands at $2.7 billion per year, Yadollah Sadeghi, the deputy head of Industry, Mines, and Trade Ministry told Fars news agency.
He said that this amount of smuggling damages the domestic firms.
The total value of Iran’s clothing market is $11.5 billion per year, Alireza Haeri, the former director of the Association of Iran Textile Industries, said before.
Foreign companies share about $2.5-3 billion of Iran’s $11.5 billion-worth clothing market.
Almost 1,500 industrial units with 30,000 employees are active in the clothing sector, with 340,000 tons of producing capacity, he said, adding the output currently reaches 300,000 tons of clothing items per year.
