By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

At least 28 million Iranians have registered at Telegram, a mobile social network application, Mohammad Mehdi Fatourehchi, head of Tehran University’s Institute of Social Studies and Research, said, Iran’s Sharvand newspaper reported.

About 55 percent of men and 51 percent of women are using social networks in Iran, according to the report.

Telegram, the messaging and content sharing app is the most popular social network app among Iranians, who use it to communicate with each other and also share content. Many of Iran's state-run news agencies have also embraced the platform, and have been using it.

More than 42 percent of users in Telegram are Iranians, with users from Russia coming in at second place with 6 percent.

In August Mohammad Hassan Entezari, a member of Iran's Supreme Council of Cyberspace, said that almost 60 percent of Iran’s internet bandwidth usage accounts for Telegram.

He expressed concern over transfer of Iranian users’ data to foreigners via foreign messaging apps that are not under control of the Iranian administration.

Iran says mobile social networking applications, including Telegram, should move their servers processing Iranian users’ data to Iran if they seek to continue their operation in the country.

The Islamic Republic has frequently requested from Telegram to move its servers into Iran.
