By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

Iran has launched a production line for fingolimod, a medicine used for treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) in St. Petersburg, Russia in a ceremony attended by Hassan Hashemi, Iran's health minister.

The private sectors of the two countries will sign 12 memorandums of understanding for cooperation in the health sector, Hashemi said, Mehr news agency reported Sept. 29.

Hashemi further said that cooperation in biotechnology, manufacturing drugs and vaccines as well as export of Iranian-made biotech medicines to Russia will be discussed during his visit to Russia.

The two countries can expand mutual cooperation in the fields of lasers and other advanced medical equipments in the future as well, he added.

By opening the fingolimod production line, Iran is fulfilling parts of former agreements with Russia to transfer technology of producing the raw material needed for making MS treatment drug.

Fingolimod is an immunomodulating drug, mostly used for treating multiple sclerosis. It has reduced the rate of relapses in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis by approximately one-half over a two-year period.

On September 21, 2010, fingolimod became the first oral disease-modifying drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration to reduce relapses and delay disability progression in patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.
