The French carmaker Renault announced that it has sold 12,500 cars to Iran in September 2016, 127 percent more year-on-year.

The figure indicates a rise by 1 percent compared to August 2016, Tasnim news agency reported Oct. 24.

The company sold over 67,046 cars to Iran during the first nine months of the current year, which indicates a rise by 182 percent in comparison to the first nine months of 2015.

In 2015, Renault sold 51,500 vehicles in Iran, giving it a market share of 4.8 percent. The figure was 56 percent more compared to Renault-made cars sold in Iran in 2014, which was 33,000.

The company sold 39,600 and 100,783 cars in Iran in 2013 and 2012 respectively.

Since last year’s historic nuclear deal signed between Iran and the world major powers, international bodies have observed a surge in interest among multinational companies in investing in the Islamic Republic’s largest non-oil sector, the automotive industry.

Iran’s automotive industry forms the second biggest sub-sector of the economy behind oil and gas, accounting for about 10 percent of GDP and employing about 4 percent of the labor force.

Iranian carmakers total output over the first half of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 20) stood at 579,776 indicating 15.6 percent rise year-on-year.
