Islamic Republic of Iran Railways needs 40,000 tons of rails to renew some parts of its railway system, an official with the company said.

Maziar Yazdani, a deputy head at Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, has said that an agreement has been reached between the company and Esfahan Steel Company to provide Islamic Republic Railways with necessary requirements, Mehr news agency reported.

According to the official, the contract envisages producing 40,000 tons of U33 rails which are employed for low speed trains (under 160 km/h).

The official, however, expressed a considerable need for acquiring UIC 66 rails which are used for high speed trains (above 160 km/h).

The official further announced plans for producing 100,000 tons of UIC 66 rails once the U33 rails are delivered.
