Iranian cyber police disband online gambling channels

Iranian cyber police have identified and disbanded 3,000 online gambling channels in the country.

The head of Iran’s cyber police, Brigadier General Kamal Hadianfar, has said that 184 individuals have recently been arrested in the Islamic Republic in connection with the illegal online gambling crimes, Fars news agency reported Dec. 7.

According to the law of Islam and the Iranian constitution, gambling is illegal in the Islamic Republic.

Elaborating on the statistics of the cyber crimes in the country, he said 66 percent of online crimes are carried out through Telegram messaging app and 20 percent through Instagram photo sharing network.

He also added that a hacker has recently gained unauthorized access to the data of 800 customers of a private bank.

The official did not provide further information on the committed crimes.

He further touched upon plans to confront online crimes in the country, saying that according to a recent decision, the administrators of the social media pages and mobile messaging channels, such as Telegram, with more than 5,000 members must apply for permission of the respective bodies.
