Russia to finance thermal power plant in southern Iran

Iran and Russia have inked a $1.6 billion agreement on building a 1,400 megawatt (MW) thermal power plant in the Islamic Republic.

Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian has said that Iran’s Thermal Power Plant Holding and a Russian company are the signatories of the deal, IRNA news agency reported.

The minister added that the power plant will be constructed in the southern province of Hormozgan near Minab County, consisting of four units.

According to the minster, each unit is projected to produce 350 MW of power.

Iran’s current power generation capacity stands at 75,912 MW which is projected to reach 100,000 MW by 2021 and 125,000 by 2025.

Speaking at a ceremony for inking the deal, the visiting Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said that the deal was finalized following three-day sessions within the 13th Iran-Russia Joint Economic Commission held in Tehran Dec11-13.

Alexander Novak added that the Russian government will finance the project for a period of five years.

Over the first seven months of the current Iranian calendar year (starting March 20), the Islamic Republic exported $86.5 million worth of goods to Russia.

In the meantime, Iran imported $106.6 million worth of goods from Russia.

Iran’s current power generation capacity stands at 75,912 MW which is projected to reach 100,000 MW by 2021 and 125,000 by 2025.
