The Iranian Parliament has passed a law that allows the government to materialize a 30-terabit/s internet bandwidth in the country, IRIB news agency reported January 14.

The decision was adopted during the Parliament’s session on the bill of the Sixth Development Plan, which covers five years starting from March 21, 2017.

In measuring data transmission speed, a terabit is one trillion binary digits, or 1,000,000,000,000 (1012) bits. A terabit is used for measuring the amount of data that is transferred in a second between two telecommunication points or within network devices.

In the past three years of President Hassan Rouhani’s administration, Iran’s internet bandwidth has grown from 81.68 gigabits per second to 564 gigabits per second, which shows a 590-percent growth, according to TechRasa.

Almost 60 percent of Iran’s internet bandwidth usage goes to the messaging app Telegram, Mohammad Hassan Entezari, a member of Iran's Supreme Council of Cyberspace, said in August.
