Iran has inaugurated the first phase of its biggest bunkering station at Salkh region in Qeshm Island, Strait of Hormuz, for delivery of fuel to the vessels passing by.

The first phase of the site became operational on Jan. 26 in a move to make the island’s Salkh region a ship fuelling hub, Mehr news agency reported.

The bunkering station has 10 storage tanks with total capacity of 52,600 tons and is capable of supplying 1 million barrels of fuel to vessels per year at its first phase.

The station’s fuel storage capacity will increase to 750,000 tons in the next phases.

Qeshm Island is situated in the Strait of Hormuz, which is the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world's most strategically important points.

Being located in the Strait of Hormuz, the island enjoys a strategic location favorable for tankers plying the Persian Gulf, Sea of Oman and high seas.
