Tehran, Iran, February 27
By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:
Iran has cancelled the construction of 50 dams, considering the country’s climate and the environmental problems they could cause, Minister of Energy Hamid Chitchian said.
“We did it because of the climate and also social concerns. We have suspended the program for now,” Chitchian stated, Mehr news agency reported February 27.
He further detailed other measures the ministry has taken to streamline water consumption.
“Right now 609 plains in the country have been tested for water level so that we can plan how to use the water for agriculture, domestic consumption, environment, and industry," he said.
“According to the 6th Development Plan (2017-22), we will save 11 billion cubic meters of ground water each year to make up for the water that was lost in the past years. It has also been agreed that we release 10.77 billion cubic meters of running waters to revive streams and
wetlands,” the official said.
