Senior Iranian official concerned over growing unemployment

Iran's First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri has expressed concerns over the growing unemployment rate in the country, saying the number of unemployed people has annually increased by 500,000 over the past four years.

This is while the number of job seekers, mostly university graduates, annually grows by 1.2 million, the senior official told state IRINN TV.

According to Jahangiri, the number of employed people in the country in 2013 stood at 20.6 million. He further added that the country’s economy is only capable of employing up to 600,000 job seekers per year.

The vice-president further called for increasing the volume of investment in the country in order to create more job opportunities.

According to the latest report by the Iranian Statistical Center, the country’s unemployment rate during the summer (June 21-Sept. 21) stood at 12.7 percent.

According to statistics about 23 million people were employed in the country in the mentioned period with 3.3 million unemployed.
