Iran’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture Abbas Keshavarz has expressed happiness that over the past three years, water efficiency improved by six percent each year and a special great improvement was achieved in the field of wheat production.
“Regarding the production of wheat alone, over the past three years we experienced water efficiency improvement of some 50 percent, where in the past each cubic meter of water would produce 500 grams, but now it produces 740 grams of wheat,” he told Mehr news agency March 19.
Keshavarz regretted failed attempts to improve water efficiency in the agriculture sector in the previous administration of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
According to the 4th Development Plan (2006-2011), water efficiency must have improved by 25 percent, but even one percent of it was not realized, he said.
