Iran discovered a new gas field in Persian Gulf close to the giant South Pars field with 1.5 trillion cubic meters of in-situ gas reserves, of which 54 percent is recoverable.

It is not clear whether the newly discovered Sepand field is shared with Qatar or not, an official at the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) anonymously told Energy News website.

He said that Iran would start exploration drillings soon.

South Pars, one third of which is in Iran’s territory, is shared with Qatar. Iranian side contains 14 trillion cubic meters of recoverable reserves.

Iran’s total recoverable gas reserves stands at about 34 trillion cubic meters.

Iran produces 500 mcm/d of gas from South Pars and its total gross gas output stands at 780 mcm/d

The country plans to increase output to 1.2 bcm/d by 2020.
