The government of Iran has given permits to 53 companies to distribute fuel across the country, according to Mohammad Reza Mazlumi, Chief Executive of Trade at the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company.

Of 53 companies, 37 are among those that already act as fuel station owners, and five more are active in oil products export and import, he told SHANA news agency May 29.

He added that the government authorizes 53 companies to run 20 percent of countrywide stations, 30 percent of provincial stations, and 50 percent of city and village stations.

In February it was announced that 39 fuel stations had been privatized. The privatization was conducted through tenders, where 60 stations in 13 provinces were put up.
