Tehran, Iran, June 21

By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:

A previously reached agreement between Iran and Japan for the equipment of customhouses has turned into its operational phase, Mehr news agency reported June 21.

Accordingly, Japan will be providing Iran’s Customs Administration with grant to purchase x-ray cargo inspection equipment.

The grant is given based on the Japanese side’s commitment to fight the smuggling of illegal drugs and chemical substances.

Iran is situated on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Persian Gulf states. The Islamic Republic shares about 900 kilometers of common border with Afghanistan, over which 74 percent of opium is smuggled.

The fight against drug trafficking annually costs Iran about $1 billion, according to the official estimates.
