Iran says military threats to endanger nuclear talks

Tehran, Iran, May 17

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Aliakbar Velayati, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's consultant in international affairs, said military threats against Iran will endanger the ongoing nuclear talks.

After the Soviet Union collapsed and George Bush senior in an address to the US Navy said the US was the world's sole superpower, the US has kept believing that it can enter anywhere and do whatever it wants without any bother, Velayati said.

The US has turned into a Don Quixote with the illusion of power from the past, threatening everybody, he added, Fars news agency reported May 17.

"As for Iran, the threats surely lack practical backing. The US has unsuccessful experience with countries weaker than Iran," he noted.

If the nuclear negotiations must progress well, they will have to be held in a balanced, interactive atmosphere, he added.

Velayati went on to criticize the US government for saying on one hand that it will veto a Congress move against the nuclear talks, and yet on the other hand confirming a Congress bill that goes against the talks.

More than benefiting them, the threats will harm the US, disturbing the existing balance among the group P5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany), he said.

"This is seen by Iran as a sort of excessive demand," the senior Iranian politician stated.

"That is why the supreme leader of the revolution said that talks under the specter of threat make no sense. Therefore, if they intend to keep doing this, the continuation of the talks will be in danger."

Iran and the six world powers are in intense talks over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program. They have set a deadline of June 30 to reach a comprehensive deal.
