Iran says major problems remain on path to nuclear deal

Tehran, Iran, June 26

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

A senior Iranian diplomat said major problems remain unsolved in the Iranian nuclear case.

"All in all, the work is moving along hard and slow," Abbas Araqchi said, IRNA news agency reported June 26.

When asked about his opinion about a foreign diplomat's saying 90 percent of the agreement draft has been done, Araqchi rejected the idea of speaking in terms of numbers and said there is a main text and a number of annexes each with a specific degree of progress.

"There has been more progress in the main text than in the annexes," he noted.

Araqchi related the issue to the fact that the annexes include numerous details and intricacies that take time for the negotiating parties to agree on.

There are some issues that are more important in qualitative terms, while some other issues have been resolved which have less value, the Iranian diplomat said.

Pointing to Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's arrival in Vienna on June 27, Araqchi said that Zarif is to hold bilateral and multilateral talks with counterparts attending the talks on June 27 and 28, after which drafting the deal will be continued.

Asked about Iran's view of extending the talks, he said the Islamic Republic is not considering an extension and is trying to reach a deal by the preset deadline, except to further continue the talks for a few more days if necessary.
