Iran interested in opening consulate general in St. Petersburg

Iran is interested in opening of the consulate general or a representative office of the embassy in St. Petersburg, Iran’s ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanai said at a meeting with the governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko, RIA Novosti reported.

Iran is interested in opening of the consulate general or a representative office of the embassy in St. Petersburg, Iran's ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanai said at a meeting with the governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko, RIA Novosti reported.

"We would like to discuss the opening of the consulate general in St. Petersburg, perhaps, a representative office of the embassy first," he said.

The ambassador said that Iran's consulate generals opened in Astrakhan and Kazan.

Poltavchenko said that the issue is in the competence of the Russian foreign ministry.
"But in any case, if such a decision is made, we will help to find a good premise," he said.

At the same time, he said that at present, there are 60 general and honorary consulates of different countries in St. Petersburg.

The two sides also discussed the cooperation in economic, trade, tourism and cultural spheres.

The cooperation in the fields of power engineering, machinery, agricultural supplies from Iran to St. Petersburg was stressed as promising.

"We are ready to develop cooperation in various areas," he said. "We are ready to bring our relations to a new level."

Poltavchenko also said that the days of St. Petersburg are planned to be held in Isfahan in 2015.
