Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged the United Nations to play a more active role in the fight against terrorism.

"A world without violence will be possible only through cooperation between governments," he said, Iran 's state IRINN TV reported on Dec. 9.

"The governments should follow a united policy," he added.

Rouhani further called for boosting regional and international cooperation to fight the Takfiri terrorist groups fighting in Syria and Iraq .

"Violence in some parts of the world such as the Middle East claims the lives of tens of women and children each day," the Iranian president noted.

He also urged the countries that support the militant groups to renounce violence and terror.

Rouhani made the remarks at the opening session of the international World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) conference, which is being held in Tehran.

Representative from 40 countries have taken part in the event.

The two-day conference will close on December 10.

The conference comes against the backdrop of the growing threat of violence and extremism across the Middle East, particularly the atrocities committed by ISIL Takfiri terrorists in Syria and Iraq.
