Iran's Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has canceled his trip to Saudi Arabia.

Rafsanjani's advisor Ghodratollah Alikhani, said that the trip has been canceled in the wake of Saudi Arabia's "invasion" to Yemen, Iran's Fars news agency reported on March 29.

In April 2014, Saudi Arabia's ambassador renewed the Saudi king's invitation to Rafsanjani to visit the Saudi kingdom.

The Saudi diplomat also praised the approach of president Hassan Rouhani's government, saying his government's policy has had positive results in Saudi Arabia and other Islamic states.

In February, Rafsanjani said that to resolve many of the issues plaguing the Middle East, there needs to be cooperation between the two regional rivals, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Current tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran were exacerbated by the 2003 fall of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Iran's growing regional influence. In February, Rafsanjani's website blamed former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for ruining relations with Saudi Arabia in 2008 by publishing a false report against the country that soured relations.
