Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei approved Iranian Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani's request that some female prisoners be released and the sentences of others be reduced.
The amnesty was granted on the occasion of birth anniversary of Hazrat Fatemeh Zahra, the daughter of Muslims prophet, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on April 10.
Iran's Constitution grants the leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon the recommendation of the judiciary chief.
Amnesties and reduced prison terms are granted mainly on occasions marking religious and national festivals in Iran.
