Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif left Tehran on April 12 for Astana for a two-day official visit at the invitation of his Kazakh counterpart Yerlan Idrisov.

The sides will discuss boosting mutual economic and political cooperation as well as the latest regional and international developments during the visit, the press service of Iran's embassy to Astana told Trend April 12.

Zarif is scheduled to meet with senior Kazakh officials including President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Senate Speaker Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev as well as foreign minister Idrisov.

Increasing trade cooperation in Caspian Sea also will be discussed during the visit.

Discussions also will touch upon the agreements reached during the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's trip to Astana last September.

In September 2014, President Rouhani, leading an economic and diplomatic delegation, made a five-day tour of the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

During the trip, Iran signed agreements with the two states on expansion of ties in various fields.

Iran- Kazakhstan trade turnover stood at about $1 billion in 2014, according to the Islamic Republic embassy to Astana.
