The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) mission in the country's south eastern borders is extended for second period, Brigadier General Ali Shadmani, deputy chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces said.

The IRGC have been commissioned to ensure the security of 300 kilometers of the Iranian border in the south east region following the increased activities of the rebel groups along Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan shared borders with Pakistan in the course of the past few months.

The mission ended a few days ago, but the Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces decided to extend the mission for another period, Shadmani said, Iran's Fars news agency reported April 26.

He did not provide further information about the length of the period.

Defending the borders is under the responsibility of the army, the commander said, adding the decision for presence of the IRGC's ground force in the region was made due to various terror attacks.

IRGC is there to safeguard the province's security and defend Zahedan(provincial capital city) against the terror attacks, Shadmani underlined.

In the past few months, extremist groups have conducted several attacks against local police offices in the region. The groups claim they're fighting against the Iranian government for protection of Sunni residents of the province.

In the most recent incident the rebel Baluchi group, Jaish al-Adl killed eight border guards near the border with Pakistan in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan on April 7.

Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that if Pakistan does not take action against Iran's Baluchi rebels, the Islamic Republic forces may enter the neighboring country's territory.
