The Iranian Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan has urged the parliament to further strengthen the ground forces of army and the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) to confront new threats.

He asked the MPs to pay special attention to the issue, addressing an open session of the parliament on May 24.

Ground battles are most decisive in today's wars, Pourdastan said, adding the army needs to buy new tanks, renew its various systems and overhaul its helicopters.

"Now we are facing a new kind of threats in the region and terrorist groups are close to the Islamic Republic borders," he said, Iran's Fars news agency reported.

He further said that last year the IS (Islamic State) group intended to enter Iran, adding, they had forecasted caches of ammunition and troops in Iran's border provinces and were ready to launch terrorist operations, explosions and riots after entering Iran's territory.

However Iran's intelligence forces neutralized their plans, Pourdastan said.

The Islamic Republic army organized five combat brigades in less than three days to confront the group, the commander stated.

"We sent our troops and reconnaissance helicopters 40 kilometers within Iraq and Iran registered artillery fire at that time," Pourdastan said.

Currently the IS group is active in Afghanistan and Pakistan as well, he added.

Recently Iranian officials have accused the US of having the plans to bring the regional insecurity to Iran's borders.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni said May 20 that the Islamic Republic enemies are trying to bring the proxy war to Iranian borders.

"We have received some information that our enemies are working with some Persian Gulf governments to bring the proxy war to Iranian borders," Ayatollah Khameni said.

The Islamic Republic will respond decisively to any "mischief," he added.

In similar statements Mohsen Rezaee, secretary of Iran's Expediency Council said the US and Israel have plans in which they seek to bring the insecurity to the Islamic Republic borders.
