Iranian ex-president's son given 10-year prison term

Iran's Supreme Court has approved 10 years imprisonment as sentence for Mehdi Hashemi, son of the former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Iran 's Fars news agency reported June 10.

Iranian Judiciary spokesman Qolamhossein Mohseni Ejei said that Hashemi would be imprisoned for 10 years due to corruption and security issues charges.

The trial of Hashemi, started last August in the Tehran Revolutionary Court behind closed doors. Hashemi had been released on bail after three months of imprisonment in December 2012.

The son of the Iranian ex-president was arrested upon his arrival in Tehran from the UK, where he lived for three years. Hashemi was arrested on charges of propaganda against the state and corruption.
