UN envoy supports Iran's initiative to resolve regional problems

The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag welcomed Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's offer for resolution of regional problems through dialogue, Irna reported.

Referring to Zarif's recent visit to Lebanon and Syria, she voiced hope for resolution of Lebanon political problems for choosing the next president.

Kaag declared her support for initiatives that stress peaceful resolution of Syria and Yemen crises.

She offered his condolences to the families of Iranian diplomats abducted in Lebanon and said that the UN is pursuing the case through its channels in coordination with Iran's embassy to Lebanon.

During his regional tour which started last Tuesday, Zarif paid visits to Lebanon, Syria, Pakistan, and India. He is scheduled to visit Russia,too.

Zarif's tour of regional countries come in the wake of the conclusion of nuclear talks between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Iran and the six powers on July 14 finalized the text of a lasting nuclear deal that would terminate all anti-Iran sanctions after taking effect. The United Nations Security Council also unanimously passed a resolution afterwards, endorsing the comprehensive accord.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on July 18 that the first priority for Tehran following the conclusion of nuclear talks is strengthening ties with the neighboring countries.
