One Iranian police officer and a teacher were killed during an armed incident in Iranshahr city, located in the country's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The police forces were patrolling in the region when unknown gunmen opened fire at the police car with automatic weapons, Iranshahr Police Chief Doustali Jalilian said, Fars news agency reported Oct. 6.

As a result of the attack, which took place last night, Sergeant Major, Hossein Ali Sobhanian and a civil citizen were killed, Jalilian said.

He further said that police have launched an operation to arrest the gunmen.

In recent months, extremist groups in the province have conducted several attacks against local police offices. The groups claim they're fighting against the Iranian government for protection of Sunni residents of the province.
