Iran slams UN human rights resolution, calls it biased

Tehran, Iran, November 20

By Mehdi Sepahvand -- Trend:

Iran's Permanent Mission to the United States has strongly condemned a recent UN resolution that expresses "serious concern" over the use of the death penalty in Iran as well as the status of the freedom of expression.

The resolution drafted by Canada was backed by a vote of 76 to 35 with 68 abstentions in a UN General Assembly committee on November 19.

Qolamhossein Dehqani, deputy permanent representative of Iran to the UN, said in reaction to the resolution that Canada "is not worried about human rights."

Canada's approach to the crimes of Israel in Gaza implies that maybe by tools such as the Human Rights Committee, Canada is pursuing political objectives, Press TV quoted Dehqani as saying Nov. 20.

He added that the resolution is based on a faulty, biased outlook, adding that the real problem with the draft is that it tries to represent the Iranian society as a strict, monophonic society.

Iran recently arrested a number of journalists on charges of being in contact with spy and intelligent services overseas.
