Tajikistan's Foreign Ministry has summoned Iran's Ambassador to Dushanbe Hojjatollah Faghani to express "regret" against a recent decision by Iranian officials to invite the leader of a banned Tajik Party to attend a conference on Islamic unity in Tehran.

Tajik foreign ministry expressed its concerns over the issue and described the leader of the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT), Muhiddin Kabiri, as a "terrorist and extremist" figure, a statement released by the Tajik foreign ministry said Dec. 29.

Media reports suggest that a state-backed delegation from Tajikistan also attended the International Conference of Islamic Unity in Tehran.

Reportedly Muhiddin Kabiri was among those who attended a meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the sidelines of the 29th International Islamic Unity Conference.

The 29th International Islamic Unity Conference kicked off in Tehran Dec. 27 in Tehran with the participation of a group of Shia and Sunni figures from various Islamic countries.
