Despite that half of the time allocated for the parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections has passed, there is still high voter turnout at the polling stations on Feb. 26.

Iranians started voting at 8:00 local time (GMT +3:30) today. They will elect 290 members of the parliament, and 88 members of the Assembly of Experts in 10 hours.

A voter speaking to Trend said "our duty is to participate in the voting to decide on the country's future, our own fates."

Another voter said that regardless of the results, the huge turnout at elections would strengthen the Islamic Republic and the development of the country.

During the round of elections, 4,844 candidates are competing, while about 55 million Iranians are eligible to vote. Each nominee should get at least 25 percent of votes in his constituency, otherwise the second round of elections is held a month after the results of the first round.

"Our expectation from the new parliament is that it will keep the economy's improvement in limelight," another voter told Trend commenting on the elections.
