Iran says can contribute to multipolar world formation

Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr. 28 By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

The Islamic Republic alongside with Russia, China and India can prevent formation of a unipolar world, headed by the US, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi, a senior military adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said.

The era of bipolar world is passed, however the West Asia is still experiencing transition period, Rahim Safavi said, Tasnim news agency reported Apr. 28.

The transition period will continue for decades, he said, adding the Islamic Republic should raise its geopolitical power in West Asia. "Today, the old powers like the US and Russia as well as new powers such as China and India, seeking to maintain their position in West Asia, where the global powers clash," he said.

The US policy of monopolizing the world is failed, Rahim Safavi added. He also accused the US of spreading insecurity in the West Asia to safeguard their presence in the region. Rahim Safavi said that a multipolar world can be formed, including an Asian power block with assistance of China, India, Russia, and Pakistan. Iran's permanent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) would be a true strategy, he said, adding the Iranian government should seriously follow the issue.

The SCO can challenge the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the future, Rahim Safavi said. The Islamic Republic eyes full membership in the SCO. Currently, Iran has an observer status in the organization, along with Afghanistan, Belarus, India, Mongolia and Pakistan. China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are SCO's full members. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey are dialogue partners.
