Iran's Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution has discussed recent remarks made by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on learning foreign languages, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said.

Rouhani said that the issue of the number of languages that should be taught at schools depends on the available number of teachers, the country's capabilities as well as the students' interest, IRNA news agency reported.

Rouhani made the remarks addressing a number of teachers on the occasion of Teachers' Week in Iran.

He further said that over 1.5 billion people live in the Indian subcontinent and they enjoy proper job opportunities in the IT sector as they have a good command of English.

Rouhani also said that if the vast majority of students tend to learn a specific language the government will be incapable of creating the conditions for teaching another language for a small number of students.

Criticizing the high interest for learning English in the country, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei May 3 said the country should pay special attention to the education of the youth as a way to defeat the global hegemonic system.

The leader also called for teaching other languages such as Spanish in schools.
