Iran suffers from 11 million slum residents, 3.5 million jobless

In places around Iran, unemployment rate stands at 60 percent, according to the country's Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli.

Fazli today appeared in the parliament to brief the MPs on Iran's social issues, IRNA news agency reported June 6.

He said that currently 11 million people live in slums across the country, three million of which live in Tehran, Mashhad, and Ahwaz.

According to his report, there are 2,700 slum areas in the whole country.

There are 3.5 million unemployed people in Iran, the minister added.

Fazli also touched upon drug addiction, noting that 60 percent of inmates in the country are directly or indirectly involved with drugs.

He went on to say that 36 percent of marriages in the country end in divorces, however in the past two years the divorce rate has been on decline.

He also said each year 600 thousand Iranians are sent to jail, of which 200 thousand stay there.
