Over 60 tons of narcotics were confiscated by the anti-drugs institutes of Sistan-Baluchestan province the past months, commander of the provincial police said on Sunday, IRNA reported.

Brigadier General Hossein Rahimi told a news conference that the rate of drugs seized during the period has increased by 43 percent compared to the figure for the corresponding period last year.

Out of the total seizures in the past three months, over 32 tons were seized by police and 17 tons by border guards and six tons by Intelligence Department and four tons by Islamic Republic Guards Corps and volunteer forces (Basij).

Last year, some 165 tons of drugs were confiscated across the province, registering an increase of 35 percent compared to the figure for the year earlier, the commander said.

Noting that Sistan-Baluchestan ranks first in the country in terms of confiscating drugs, Rahimi said that the province has launched different projects to counter illicit drugs, compiling a databank and reinforcement and equipping checkpoints.
