Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said that protecting the national unity and territorial sovereignty are the most important issues for Iraq.

President Rouhani warned the neighboring nation against the enemy’s plots and called on the Iraqi people to protect their national unity, the official news website of Iranian government reported.

Speaking in a meeting with Ammar Hakim, the leader of the National Iraqi Alliance (NIA), in Tehran, President Rouhani said creating discord among the regional nations and the issue of terrorism are “plots hatched by the enemies.”

He further hailed the recent breakthrough of Iraqi government and nation in fight against terrorism, saying Iranian government and nation will stand by regional nations, including Iraq and Syria in confronting the issue of terrorism.

Ammar Hakim and his accompanying delegation over the past week met several high-ranking Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to discuss bilateral ties and regional issues.

Since September, Ammar has served as the head of the National Iraqi Alliance (NIA), comprising Shiite political parties.

The alliance, which holds the majority of seats in the Iraqi parliament, includes four political parties, namely the State of Law Coalition, the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, the National Reform Trend Party and the Sadrist Movement.
