By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani rejected the notion that Tehran is after the collapse of the Saudi Arabia government.

The Islamic Republic has always defended the national sovereignty of all regional countries, Shamkhani said, Tasnim news agency reported Jan. 16.

“Contrary to some perceptions, the Islamic Republic not only not after the collapse of Saudi government, but also is willing to contain efforts to overthrow it,” he added.

The collapse of Saudi government will not necessarily mean that the current government in the Arab country would be replaced by a better one, Shamkhani said.

He further said that following the possible collapse of Saudi government, it is most likely that Saudi Arabia would be split up and a decadent and extremist thinking, like the Islamic State terrorist group, would rule major parts of the country.

Relations between Tehran and Riyadh have strained over the past years after their conflicting views on regional developments, particularly on Yemen and Syria, became more noticeable.

Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic relations with Iran after protesters stormed the kingdom's embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad on January 2, 2016, in response to Riyadh's execution of a prominent Saudi Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
