Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has made a one-day trip to the border province of Sistan-Baluchestan to inaugurate several projects, IRNA news agency reported February 28.

The projects include the Zahedan International Airport’s second runway, an airline company, Chehel Koreh copper mine and factory, and Iranshahr-Chabahar gas pipeline.

Upon arrival in the province, the president said his administration has done a great job in accomplishing 55 projects in the underdeveloped province as he had promised in 2013 when he took office.

Sistan-Baluchestan is the vastest province in Iran with an area of 187,502 square kilometers. The population of the province is 800 thousand.

The remote province has been a source of security concern for the government. Sharing borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, the province frequently witnesses terrorist and drugs gangs from these two countries venture inside its territory.

The Iranian government has been concerned with the possibility of terrorist groups across the border influencing the jobless and economically underprivileged youth in Sistan-Baluchestan.

Recently Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered $500 million finance from the National Development Fund to go into development projects in the province.
