Iran blocks between 16,000 and 20,000 channels on the Telegram messaging service every week, said Attorney General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, adding however that this is not enough.
A nationwide web is what Iran needs, Montazeri stressed, Fars news agency reported March 17.
He further warned that ahead of presidential elections, “those who seek to slander persons” will face judiciary action.
The statements come at a time when Iran is preparing for presidential elections, to be held May 19.
The past few days have also seen the arrest of a number of social media activists.
Four MPs on March 17 wrote a letter to President Hassan Rouhani, pointing his attention to the arrests and demanding action.
