A car overturned on the Bojnord-Shirvan highway in Iran's North Khorasan Province, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported Dec. 19.

Reportedly, five people - the car's driver and four passengers - were burned alive in the accident, which took place Dec. 19 at about 4 o'clock in the morning (UTC/GMT +3:30 hours).

Currently, an investigation of the accident is underway.

Earlier on Nov. 13, a similar traffic accident took place in Iran, where also five people were burned alive as their car collided with a truck.

On Nov. 16, Javad Hedayati, an official with Iran's Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization, said some 28,000 people were killed in road accidents in the country in Iranian year of 1385 (March 2006-March 2007).

He said for the third consecutive year, the number of fatalities decreased to 18,000 in the previous year.

Iran's Roads and Urban Development Minister Abbas Akhoundi said on Nov. 10 that the road accidents take a heavy toll, and hence the "national will" is needed to reduce accidents and improve road safety.

He added that road fatalities are terribly high in Iran, killing 17,000-18,000 people per year.
