At least five police officers were killed in a standoff with armed robbers in Iran's western cities of Khomein and Golpayegan.

Armed robbers opened fired on police officers after robbing a bank in Khomein. At least three officers were killed on the spot, Iran's Fars news agency reported Dec. 28.

The robbers then escaped to Golpayegan and engaged in a shootout with police there.

Two other police officers and one of the four robbers were killed in the city.

The deputy head of Golpayegan Police Department was among the victims.

The other three robbers then stole a car, and killed the driver. The body of the driver's son has also been found along the road.

The manhunt is still underway.

At least five police officers have also been wounded during the shootouts.
