Dust has reached 15 times above the normal level in the cities of Ahwaz, Abadan, Dezful, and Dasht Azadegan, in southwestern Iran.

Kourosh Bahadori, the director of Khuzestan province's meteorology department, said dust has reached 2,335 micrograms per cubic meter, which is 15 times above the normal level, Iran's Shana news agency reported on Jan. 28.

The dust storm phenomenon in Ahwaz has reduced the visibility to less than 600 meters and dur to that four flights from Ahwaz airport have been cancelled, he added.

Dust, mostly originating from Iraq, is one of the prime factors behind the pollution in some other Iranian cities like Sanandaj, Kermanshah and Yasouj.

Dust storms can jeopardize people's health in a number of ways. The dust particles in the air can lead to a number of respiratory problems, asthma especially, not to mention lung cancer.
