Member of Tehran City Council Board of Directors Abolfazl Qanaati says that the city's taxi cabs are going to be equipped with POS machines, Mehr news agency reported Feb. 14.
Talks have been held with a number of companies which can provide the Tehran Taxi Co. with electronic services, he said.
There we be a machine installed inside the taxi cabs where passengers can swipe their cards instead of paying the fare in cash.
"The services we are going to provide are more than just swiping a card," he added. "In fact with the system we are going to introduce, people can use cell phone applications to send messages to the central unit and demand a taxi. The nearest taxi will then be dispatched to his/her location. The person will also get to know the time the taxi would take to arrive."
He added that the system will also increase the company's control over taxi cabs.
"The taxis will be controlled via this system, which makes clear whether they are busy working in their predefined course or are idle. Plus, the fare they receive will also be monitored in the center," Qanaati stated.
