A landmine remaining from Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) blasted in Iran's western province of Ilam, injuring 5 students.

Ilam's Education Department Director General Ali Beiranvand said that all of the students were boys of 7-12 years of age, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on March 3.

One of the students reportedly injured his eyes, and was taken to a hospital for treatment, he said.

Iran-Iraq war started in 1980 and lasted for eight years. During wartime, million hectares of western region lands were mined. Mine zones are currently being cleared in Iran. Iran says some 4.2 million hectares of Iran's western regions are a mine-affected area.
