Iran announces date for launching its first destroyer in Caspian Sea

Baku, Azerbaijan, March 8

Iran will launch its first destroyer in the Caspian Sea near the northern port city of Bandar Anzali on March 9.

Iran's senior military officials including Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari as well as Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council are scheduled to attend the ceremony, the Islamic Republic's official IRNA news agency reported March 8.

The home-made destroyer dubbed "Damavand" will join Iran's 4th Naval Zone fleet in the Caspian Sea.

The production of the Damavand destroyer started in 2010, according to the Iranian media outlets. It will have the ability to carry helicopters, anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and torpedoes. The ship will also be equipped with electronic warfare devices.

Iranian officials say that the country is upgrading its warfare capabilities in the Caspian Sea in a bid to maintain peace and security along its coastal waters in the North.

Iranian Army's 4th Naval Zone Admiral Khordad Hakimi said last November that among the Caspian Littoral countries, only Russia has destroyers, and Iran's army should be always ready to tackle any threats.

Hakimi said the Caspian Sea's security depends on Iran and other littoral countries' army forces.
