Iran's border police seized some 1.1 metric tons of opium in the south eastern Province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

The incident took place near Saravan city on the Iran-Pakistan border, when the smugglers were crossing the border, Rohambakhsh Habibi, commander of the province border guards said, Iran's Mehr news agency reported March 21.

The smugglers left their opium batch and escaped after the police operation, he added.

Iran is situated on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Gulf states. The Islamic Republic shares about 900 kilometers of a common border with Afghanistan, over which 74 percent of opium is smuggled‫.

About 470 metric tons of various drugs were seized in Iran during the first ten months of the last Iranian fiscal year (March 21, 2014-Jan 20).

It was reported that some 500 metric tons of drugs were seized in the country during the Iranian fiscal year of 1392 (March 21, 2013 to March 21, 2014).

The fight against drugs annually costs Iran about $1 billion, according to the official estimates.

The statistics also says there are about two million drug users in Iran‫.
