Poverty and unemployment are the causes of insecurity in the society, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said during the meeting with commanders of the Law Enforcement Force of Iran (NAJA) in Tehran.
Rouhani said that to create security, poverty and unemployment should be eliminated first of all, and the administration has issues of security and social health as top priorities, Iran's Fars news agency reported on April 25.
Previously, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that poverty and discrimination should be uprooted in the Islamic Republic. He stressed importance of using domestic potential for resolving people's economic problems and improving their livelihood.
Last year Iranian MP Mousarreza Servati said that some 15 million of Iranian population (or 20 percent) live below the poverty line.
This is while Iranian Labor, Cooperatives, and Social Welfare Minister Ali Rabiei said in 2014 that some 12 million of Iranians have been identified as those living in poverty. He said at the time that poverty level is assessed based on the three indices of revenues, appropriate health and education services
Iran's Department of Statistics announced in May 2010 that ten million Iranians live under the "Absolute Poverty Line" and 30 million live under the "Relative Poverty Line."
