Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr.26

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: More than 1,000 Iranians have been afflicted with Shigellosis, which is a foodborne infectious illness, said Mahmoud Nabavi, an official with the Iranian Ministry of Health.

Nabavi added that the illness has been seen in the two provinces of Isfahan and Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari, but no death has been reported yet, Iran's Fars news agency reported on April 26.

The disease is caused by irrigation of vegetable and summer crop farmlands by polluted water, he said, adding that news about death cases is not confirmed.

The causative organism is frequently found in water polluted with human feces, and is transmitted via the fecal-oral route. The usual mode of transmission is directly person-to-person hand-to-mouth, in the setting of poor hygiene among children.
