At least five people were injured in a gas leakage incident in a refinery in Iran 's central city of Arak.

It is the third incident in the Shazand refinery in last seven days.

Five people were poisoned by nitrogen during overhauling the refinery's reduced crude desulphurization (RCD) unit, and were taken to a local hospital, Fars news agency reported May 5.

The condition of the injured people is reportedly serious.

In two similar incidents on April 27 and April 30 at least eight people were injured, three of them dead in hospital.

It should be noted that the Shazand refinery has experienced various incidents in recent months.

Last November two people were severely injured in a fire that occurred at the Residual Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC) unit of the refinery.

The incident occurred due to leaking of the oil products in the discharge point of the refinery's main tower.

The refinery's RFCC unit went offline several times due to technical problems last year. During the downtime, the refinery's Euro 4 gasoline production was decreased by 8-9 million liters per day and was nearly halved.
